NSW: City motorists urged to become Smogbusters

SYDNEY, April 19 AAP - City motorists have been urged to become Smogbusters for a day to
celebrate the nation's first clean air day on Wednesday.

The National Heart Foundation and Asthma Australia are urging commuters to leave their cars
at home and find non-polluting ways to get to work on Smogbusters Day.

Activities have been planned in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth to
celebrate the day.

Federal Environment Minister Senator Robert Hill said air pollution was a major
environmental concern.

"Every small step motorists take out of their cars will help reduce urban air pollution,"
Senator Hill said.

Vehicle exhaust fumes were the biggest contributors to urban air pollution, causing asthma
attacks and breathing difficulties, he said.

There is also an established link to an increased number of deaths from heart and lung
disease, he said.
