Fed: Adult stem cells can do the job - specialists tell MPs
Specialists have told MPs that adult stem cells could do the job to treat disease, and people shouldn't equate stem cell research with cure.
Federal politicians this week began debating whether or not to permit embryonic stemcell research, an issue which will allow them to make conscience votes.
The specialists have travelled to Canberra to brief politicians today on adult stemcell research, which they say is already being used to advance disease treatment.
Queensland Institute of Medical Research director Professor MICHAEL GOOD says theybelieve they can do more with adult stem cells so far than embryonic stem cells.
Neurologist PETER SILBURN says that in the general community people have equated stemcells with cure, but they should be equating them with treating diseases.
He says what they are trying to say is that adult stem cells can do the job.
